Title: An Imperceivable Reassurance
Medium: Acrylic and embroidery
Dimensions: 30" x 40"
Date Completed: October 2021
Additional details: People, lovers or strangers, always grab at each other. Some grab with their eyes, and some with their mouths. Even while surrounded by so many people who love you, it is easy to feel tired, and we put on masks. This piece, with its grotesque wings of hands, explores that irony of growing weary from attention, and from what is truly denoted as reassurance.
This piece opens with a new series that explores the nature of what it feels like to be alone, yet so distant from yourself, like a stranger.
Title: Unstable
Medium: Mixed Media Sculpture (Wires, pages, feathers)
Dimensions: 30" x 20" x 26"
Date Completed: July 2021
Additional details: The search for our sense of self is one riddled with haphazard constructions. We fall easily on the judgments of others and jumbled thoughts, and the grounds upon which we walk to find ourselves are unstable and dangerous.
Title: Self-Contradiction
Medium: Acrylic paint on cardboard, wires, book pages
Dimensions: 16" x 23"
Date Completed: October 2021
Additional details: Self-assurance is a battle within ourselves because it is a phenomenon of contrasting thoughts. It often does not lead to peace but always provides routes of idealization or romanticization of reality. This piece is a diagrammatic representation of the battlefield in our mind. It depicts sites of intersection, discontinuation, violation, mending, and re-composition. The end result is an understanding that despite the violence and the paradox of our insecurities, our minds ultimately form a beautiful and evolving fabric.
Title: Escape
Medium: Fabric, patterned paper, sewing thread, image transfer, buttons, embroidery thread, acrylic paint, watercolor paint
Dimensions: 18” x 20”
Date Completed: November 2021
Additional details: Being emotionally lost leaves us in a limbo of what we could consider to be an escape. Whether it is from the help of a hand that reaches out to us, symbols that point us in the direction of an escape, or a door that is left wide open for us to leave through, the act of being left alone leaves us with the greatest challenge of picking ourselves up in situations of once being left with nothing but ourselves. As if it is like a trick that is almost too good to be true, this is yet another aspect of what it is like to truly feel alone, even in situations of being placed in a room full of eyes that peer into our tainted hearts.
