Additional details: Doljabi is a Korean tradition where 100-day-old babies are presented with objects to grab. Each one symbolizes a blessing in the baby’s potential future. I grew up with expectations of conventional success, and choosing art was never as well-applauded or up to Asian standards of being raised as future doctors and lawyers. Although my parents have been supportive of my artistic pursuit, I’ve struggled a long time with an internal opposition I had grown for my fear of failure. I have learned to overcome it by embracing my imperfections and fears, to incorporate them in my identity and practice. My imperfections and fears are one of my most interesting and insightful qualities and have inspired many of the pieces in my portfolio.
